As you read about these Hometown Heroes, we hope you will join us in celebrating their commitment to our community. Every one represents a generosity of spirit and caring that creates the quality of life we cherish here—as important as the landscape, the rural character and quaint seaside towns. This book is a testimony to the fact that heroes don’t have to risk their lives for the rest of us to be inspired, enriched and even changed.
In the spring of 2005, a volunteer committee was formed to design and manage the process of publishing a collection of 52 of Susan’s profiles—the first book in a series. Like so many blessings we enjoy on this island, a group of caring volunteers is largely responsible for what you now hold in your hands.
After all, it isn’t just the one hero, but the many—the everyday heroes who create our beautiful island home. Heroes like you.
The publication of this book and future volumes of the “Hometown Heroes” series is made possible through donations and book sales. Profits from Volume 1 are divided between supporting the publication of future volumes of “Hometown Heroes” and the Youth Programs of the South Whidbey Commons.

Please check out the South Whidbey Commons and their community projects. Proceeds from book sales will benefit their Youth Programs.

For all the hypnotic views of snow-covered mountains and solitary beaches that Whidbey Island offers, it’s the sense of caring and connection that holds the most attraction. In “Hometown Heroes,” Susan Knickerbocker shares the stories that make Whidbey Island an extraordinary place to live, a place of encouragement and support, a place that embodies the spirit of community.
Inspired by the quietly heroic lives of our island’s people, Susan got an idea in the spring of 1995 for a newspaper series that would tell their stories. Since then, she has created more than 150 profiles of our island’s “Hometown Heroes”—articles that are still among the most widely read features in the South Whidbey Record today.
Susan has written more than a body of work; she has created a legacy—one that is strangely not her own. Indeed, she has no desire to “own” it. Rather, she has helped create the legacy of this island—a testimony to the people who have made South Whidbey one of the most dynamic, inspiring, and lovely places in the world to live.
May you see your own generous spirit reflected in these pages.
May you be inspired by what you see.
